Upper Dolpo Trek

This is the best known of the many isolated high Himalayan valley treks across north western Nepal. High above tree level, much of Upper Dolpo looks like the surface of the moon. Surrounded by high mountains including the Dhaulagiri massif to the southeast and cut off by high passes and closed by snow half the year, Dolpo is close to Tibet, where people emigrated from perhaps 1,000 years ago. Time has stood still here for centuries as the inhabitants of Tibetan origin continue to live, cultivate and trade the way they have done since time immemorial. We observe different rain shadow landscapes with stunning mountain views, wild flowers, Himalayan blue sheep, snow leopards and the huge Himalayan griffon hovering in the blue sky. Dust blows in the afternoon when the winds are stronger. Tiny villages at 17,000 feet are dwarfed by gigantic mountains towering high above them. Trekking through Dolpo is an experience not easily forgotten.
